Balayage vs Highlights: Which is Right for You?
April 28, 2026 - 5 min read

Both techniques add dimension and light to your hair, but the approaches, results, and maintenance differ significantly. Here's what our colorist Majduline recommends.
Balayage: The Natural Look
Balayage (French for "sweeping") is a freehand painting technique where color is applied to the surface of the hair. This creates a graduated, sun-kissed effect that grows out naturally without a harsh root line.
- Best for: Natural-looking dimension and low maintenance
- Maintenance: Touch-ups every 12-16 weeks
- Works with: All hair lengths, especially medium to long
- Result: Soft, blended, effortless-looking color
Highlights: The Classic Choice
Traditional highlights use foils to isolate strands and apply color evenly from root to tip. This creates consistent, uniform lightening and can achieve a more dramatic transformation.
- Best for: Maximum brightness and all-over dimension
- Maintenance: Touch-ups every 6-8 weeks
- Works with: All hair lengths and textures
- Result: Consistent, even lightening throughout
Can You Combine Both?
Absolutely. Many of our clients get a "foilayage" - balayage at the mid-lengths and ends combined with fine foil highlights at the crown for maximum brightness while keeping a natural root transition.
